This paper rethinks the issue of vowel harmony in Korean sound-symbolic words, using more refined data, which is extracted from a large size of corpus, SJ-RIKS (Kang and Kim, 2009). The data of this paper contains 1,023 reduplicative sound-symbolic words of which the base is composed of two or three syllables. It is distinct from that of previous studies in that the sound-symbolic words are all listed in Pyo-jun-gug-eo-dai-sa-jeon (Grand Dictionary of Standard Korean, The National Institute of the Korean Language). By and large, the result of the analysis in this paper supports the proposals of previous studies. However, it is shown that the partial neutrality of [a] is not found in the data of this paper. Thus, Larsen and Heinz (2012)'s proposal of the [a]'s partial neutrality is not supported by the result of this paper. In addition, this paper discusses the additional issues of vowel harmony in Korean sound-symbolic words, such as the transparency issue of medial vowels, the difference in vowel harmony between cross-modal sound-symbolic words and onomatopoeic ones, and the issue of use frequency effect on vowel harmony. The purpose of this paper is to point out some limits in the English compound verbs' classifications of previous studies and to propose an alternative approach to English compound verbs based on Relevance Theory. In the previous works of analyzing the relations between the constituents consisting of the compound verbs, English compounds verbs were generally classified according to their forms, functions, and meanings. In terms of functional relations between constituents, English compound words were classified as subordinative, determinative, or coordinative. And in terms of meanings between constituents, they were classified as endocentric and exocentric. However, those classifications cannot explicitly demonstrate why the same compound verb in the same classification can have different meanings in different contexts. Thus this paper argues that in Relevance Theory, English compound verbs are to be understood based on contextual information, and the meaning of English compound verbs should be understood through the process based on the ad hoc concept. The current study aims to compare the effects of a DDL approach with the effects of an explicit approach using concordances on the improvement of productive and receptive vocabulary knowledge and reading skills and to investigate the changes caused by the effects of the DDL approach over time. The study involved two groups of high school students from higher-level classes. According to the results of an independent t-test. DDL was more effective for productive vocabulary knowledge over the shorter term. In contrast, from the results of a dependent t-test, only DDL was effective for receptive vocabulary knowledge over shorter term, while both approaches were effective for longer-term productive vocabulary knowledge. Data analysis from a repeated measures ANOVA indicated that there was a statistically significant interaction effect between the two approaches and time. In addition, DDL was more significant for reading skills over a longer-term, and there was a correlation between vocabulary knowledge and reading ability. 4Analyzing Subjecthood Tests in Korean Using a Cross-Validation

Many diagnostics have been proposed to examine subjecthood in Korean, some of which were investigated in terms of their validity as subject diagnostics through a series of experimental studies. This paper takes the experimental data from three experimental studies (Kim et al., 2015; Lee et al., 2015a; Kim et al., 2017) that were previously conducted, and examines the validity of six diagnostic tests using cross-validation and a machine learning method. The experimental data were evenly divided into ten parts (10-fold cross-validation): Nine of them were used for machine learning (training data set), and the remaining one was for the testing (test data set). The analysis was conducted ten times, and the average values were taken. A simple linear regression was conducted for machine learning. Through the analysis, the following results were observed: (i) The accuracy of the diagnostics for Single Subject Construction (SSC) was much higher than that of Multiple Subject Construction (MSC) (SSC: 81,78, MSC: 68.66), (ii) Adjunct Control was the most accurate for SSC, whereas Coordinated Deletion for MSC, (iii) HA and PL Showed low performance. The results also seem to imply that some parts cannot be explained by a simple linear model but can be analyzed with non-linear modeling of language. 5Korean EFL Learners' Identification of English Consonant Contrasts in Word-final Position

The study investigated whether Korean EFL learners' identification of English consonant contrasts in word-final position was affected by the types of contrasting consonants and by vowel contexts. The study also examined whether Korean EFL learners' identification accuracy had a correlation with their English listening comprehension test scores. To that end, 123 Korean high school students completed an English consonant identification task with English nonce words. The nonce word stimuli consisted of 8 types of English consonant minimal pairs (/p-f/, /b-v/, /t-ɵ/, /d-ð/, /s-ʧ/, /z-ʤ/, /s-ɵ/, /z-ð/) combined with one of three vowels (/i, a, u/). The results showed that both the types of contrasting consonants and vowel contexts had a great impact on Korean high school students' identification of English consonant contrasts in word-final position. Korean high school students' ability to identify English consonant contrasts was also correlated with their English listening comprehension test scores. Based on the findings of the study, some implications for the teaching and learning of English consonant contrasts for Korean EFL learners were drawn. (Korea University)

6Categorization of Korean Double Accusative Constructions

The current study has reviewed Korean double accusative constructions (DACs), which refer to constructions where two NPs marked with -(l)ul appear at the same time in a sentence. It gives rise to questions about which one is a grammatical object and what the other NP is in a sentence. To solve these questions, we have classified DACs into four types according to syntactic and semantic/pragmatic perspectives. There are four types of DACs: NP2 as a grammatical object, NP1 as a focus or topic; NP2 as a grammatical object, NP1 as a topic; NP1 as a grammatical object, NP2 as a modifier; NP1 as a grammatical object, NP2 as a part of the predicate. That is, in the first two types, NP2 is a grammatical object, while in the other two types, NP1 is a grammatical object. Additionally, the NP, which is not a grammatical object in the first three types, can be left out from a sentence, whereas it is obligatory in the last type. The current study aims at providing an account for the licensing of negative polarity items in the so-called INP (inherently negative predicate) contexts. Sohn (1995) claims, following Progovac (1988) and Laka (1990), that there is a negative complementizer or operator in Korean just as in English, Spanish, and Basque and this negative complementizer, selected by an INP, can license an NPI within the embedded clause. Chung (2006) reports that not just an NPI within the embedded clause, but an NPI appearing as a matrix subject can be licensed in the INP context. After showing that this is not explained by Sohn (1995), Chung proposes an alternative analysis - the complex predicate analysis. However, there are also some nontrivial problems in Chung's analysis as well, and a new analysis is proposed, which can account for the new sets of data as well as old ones. It will be shown that a slightly revised version of Sohn's negative operator analysis (a new NOA) can advance our understanding of the NPI licensing in the INP contexts. (Hannam University)

This study aims to investigate the function shift of a lexical item, 'toka' from a Coordinator to an Adverbial Particle, along with its additional usage change as a Quotation Marker. The Coordinator 'toka' has long been perceived as a combination of the quotative 'to' and the adverbial particle 'ka' since the lexical item has been established as a particle since the Muromachi era. In that period, 'toka' is certainly a Coordinator, although it seems easy to see the influence of 'to' as a quotation marker and 'ka' as an adverbial particle that shows uncertainty. During the Meiji era, 'toka' further reached the status as a Coordinating conjunction on its own, being the host of another suffixal particle. Furthermore, in the later years of Edo, there are some cases in which 'toka' implies implicit items in the conjunct. This usage gives rise to 'toka' as an adverbial particle, which is productively used in Contemporary Japanese. It is worthwhile to notice that 'toka' is used as a Coordinator when it concords with a verb like 'iu,' whereas 'toka' function more frequently as a quotation marker. The current research, in short, shows that the dual functions of the Adverbial Particle and Quotation Marker in the usage of 'toka' did originate from its coordinating function.
