초록보기

This study aims to investigate English learning motivation of students attending the specialized high school and to examine their English classroom environment. To achieve the goal of this investigation, the researcher conducted both quantitative and qualitative research. The quantitative research included a survey of 109 specialized high school students while qualitative research was also conducted through class observation and a teacher interview. The quantitative research showed that the most predominant motivation factor for learning English among specialized high school students is 'ought-to L2 self' while the least prevailing motivation factor is intrinsic motivation. On the other hand, the dominant demotivating factor is learning difficulty due to the lack of basic English knowledge. In addition, it is noted that the English class desired by students is a practical conversation class centered on speaking activities. According to the qualitative research through class observation and interview, it is suggested that an integrated class of English and art is one of the feasible ways to increase students' participation and to enhance students' learning motivation. This study implies the need for continuous follow-up research of English classes for specialized high school students. (Daejeon University)

초록보기

Picturebooks, based on life, include the customs or values of the period, beliefs and lifestyles in their works. So with the changing years, they also undergo changes. Picturebooks in the digital age become much more complex and sophisticated than before, requiring more complex aspects and deeper insight. Various literary devices are used to convey multidimensional meanings. Through these processes and changes, the existing strict literary system collapses, and experimental forms and narrative methods, such as genre convergence, meta-structure, and the bold relationship between space-time are revealed in modern picturebooks. This change in children's literature in the digital age is explained by Dresang's “Radical Change Theory” (Dresang, 3). According to this theory, modern children's literature undergoes three types of changes: changing forms and formats, changing perspectives, and changing boundaries. In this paper, I'd like to analyze the complexities the interesting characteristics shown in picturebooks of the digital age based on this “Radical Change Theory.” (Hannam University)

3Wilde's Subversive Desire in The Picture of Dorian Gray

초록보기

Conventional critiques generally assume that Wilde eventually supports Victorian morality, which, in psychoanalytic terms, means he becomes absorbed by the desire of the Other, the Symbolic order located in the Unconscious, which corresponds to conscience and the Freudian superego. However, Wilde's strategically equivocal way of writing, disguises his deeply embedded and real ideals of aestheticism and hedonism, stigmatized as 'evil' by Victorian society. His conformity to Victorian mores is only apparent, not real. With focused attention given to analysis of marginalized persons and the profoundly implicit meaning of the deaths of Basil and Dorian, from the perspective of psychoanalysis, it can be detected that what Wilde actually defends is his desire to realize his aesthetic ideal. More specifically, Wilde can be interpreted as a subject who traverses from the fantasy that he is forcibly given in the symbolic order, to the fantasy he creates from his own desire. In this light, Wilde's desire portrayed in this novel is a subversive one that realizes his aesthetic ideal. (Daeshin University)

4Reflections on Americanism in English Spelling: -o(u)r

초록보기

As a sociohistorical approach to Americanism in the '-o(u)r' spelling, the present study investigates both dynamics and fluidity that occur in a process of their own spelling reforms in the US and the UK. It also examines to what extent British English and American English have been consistent in their use of '-our' and '-or' respectively, when it comes to the issue of fluidity in particular. However, despite such an apparent contrast between the two varieties of English, British English is revealed to share more with the American '-or' ending than American English with the British '-our' ending. This study attempts to account for this unbalancing state of affairs based on a phonological rationale leading to the isochrony of stress-timed languages including English. Aligned with this approach is a general tendency to show that the Americanism for the '-or' spelling is gradually on the rise not only in Kachru's expanding circle countries but also in some, but not all, of the ex-colonial countries belonging to Kachru's outer circle. 초록보기

This article examines the properties of econo-political power exercised in a military camptown shortly after the Korean War, and the negative impact of that power on the villagers' lives, as revealed in Fenkl's novel Memories of My Ghost Brother. From a Freudian perspective, this work focuses on the concept of “necropolitics,” describing social and political power that dictates the death or life of people. As expected, there are serious corruptions, perversions, sexual abuses, black-market transactions, infanticides, racist adoptions, and disastrous and appalling deaths into the camptown where necropolitics operates, while the Korean government casts its people aside, as the poverty-stricken villagers desperately pursue money flown in with the U.S. military. Like the protagonist Insu's cousin Gannan, who became a prostitute and then committed suicide, many Korean women at that time struggled against Confucian sexism, and American racism added to this gendered burden and forced Korean sex workers, YangKongjus to kill themselves or their own babies, or at least give them up for adoption, when GIs who might marry the women did not accept their babies. Insu's father's racist discrimination, as well as neighbors' misdeeds, incessantly wounded the protagonist Insu, a son of a YangKongju and an American GI. These painful experiences caused Insu to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders, including anxiety, melancholia, and guilt as shown through his frequent nightmares or dreadful daydreams. His traumatic neurosis is deepened with nightmares about the ghost of his elder brother, Christopher, whom his mother gave up for adoption to marry his father. Also, the horrible memory of seeing Gannan's corpse always triggers Insu to recollect other ill-fated people's deaths in the camptown. This suggests that his traumatic neurosis will continue endlessly. (Chosun University)
