초록보기

Antony and Cleopatra is regarded as a transitional play between the great tragedies and the late romances. Shakespeare mingles tragedy and comedy in the play. This paper mainly intends to pursue the interrelations of the opposing dramatic genres of tragedy and comedy, especially based on play's allegorical meaning in its opposing world of Rome and Egypt. The play consists of Antony's transitional movement between Rome as the world of tragedy and Egypt as that of comedy. While the realistic world of Rome is full of formal, public and historical energies, in the romantic world of Egypt love, the central activities of Rome can be highlighted via playing and eating. Despite a tragic sequence consisting of the suicides of the lovers, both the hero and the heroine are ennobled in the desiring imagination of their lover. They escape from the mutable sublunar realm, where they couldn't embody their dream of romantic love, and move into the eternal world of transcendence, where they will begin again their ideal love. 초록보기

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of utilizing mobile phones in classrooms to enhance reading comprehension of English language learners and explore the learner's opinions on mobile phones as learning tools. For this, control and experimental groups are created; the former includes teacher's explanation, peer discussion, and information from texts and the latter focuses on using mobile phones to conduct information searching, utilizing mobile application, and product uploading to online communities. A pre-test, post-test, and open-ended questionnaire are conducted to determine the differences on efficiency of mobile technology for EFL learners' reading comprehension and consider learner's opinion on mobile devices to enhance learning. The results show that the experimental group demonstrates a higher score than the control group does. It means that it is very effective to utilize mobile phones to improve understanding of certain information of English texts. The results of the questionnaire, additionally, are as following 1) the satisfactory points of mobile use are convenience and novelty, interest and fun, and efficiency of learning, 2) the unsatisfactory points are hassle, difficulty in using the device, inefficiency of learning, and inconvenience of the device. The findings of this study can provide pedagogical implications for utilizing mobile phone in EFL classroom for reading comprehension. (Kookmin University)

초록보기

The present study explores the various uses of the high-frequency verb 'make' by Korean learners of English. Specifically, we focus on the usage of this verb revealed in a Korean learner spoken corpus and compare its result with the native English speaker corpus (SBCSAE) and a Korean learner written corpus (Kim, 2002). A combination of manual and computer-aided approaches using software called AntConc 3.5.8 is used for analysis. The results demonstrate that there are significant differences in the usage of 'make' in the two spoken corpora under study. Specifically, while Korean learners tend to overgeneralize the causative and productive meaning of 'make', the preferred use of 'make' among English speakers is the delexical one. In addition, the frequency of productive meaning of 'make' by the Korean learners of English is noticeably higher as compared to the results of the written corpora. Taken together, the results of the present study allow us to draw the following two conclusions. First, in speaking, Korean learners use 'make' differently from native English speakers; second, the Korean learners' uses of 'make' in speaking are significantly different from those in writing. Moreover, the current study implies pedagogical implications. That is, students should be given a corpus-driven teaching to learn how to use high-frequency delexical verbs correctly occurring in natural contexts, comparing native English speaker spoken corpus. 초록보기

The preponderance of debate in literary works of England since the middle ages speaks to its popularity. Milton also wide use of debate in his works as debate or disputations dominate the action between characters in his major poems, Paradise Lost, Samson Agonistes and Paradise Regained. Depending upon its usage, the debate can be an introspective vehicle for self-discovery whereby characters such as Samson gain insight and wisdom through his debate with Manor and Dalila. Debate, however, can also take on a more sinister function as an instrument of evil which is the use of debate as a tool for audience manipulation, particularly in connection with the parliamentary debate in Book 2 of Paradise Lost. In this episode, Milton highlights the potential dangers of debate It means that the superficial appearance of the parliamentary free debate in Hell moves inexorably towards the foregone conclusion of Satan's evil plan. 초록보기

Having staged the trend of the times quickly, Caryl Churchill thoroughly explores an era of being bombarded with information in Love and Information. The story portrays modern people who face the heavy burden of information. The work consists of seven sections, seven scenes in each of the first six sections with a title, and eight scenes in the seventh section. The sections should be performed in order, but the scenes within one section can be performed in accordance with the principles of the director. Furthermore, there are no specific directions to the frame of each scene and the lines are not allocated to any character. Due to the characteristic of such an indeterminable text, Love and Information create a completely different play in each performance where a playwright, a director and actors should collaborate base on the common creativity. This paper includes three main ideas. First, this paper explores what Churchill intends to convey through several representative scenes in the text of Love and Information, and the effects of the indefinite text on readers. Second, according to the New York Theatre Workshop production in 2014, it analyzes the changes and effects when such text is performed. Finally, it reveals a messages that Churchill tries to give the audience with this indeterminable script and performance. (Chonbuk National University)
