This study examined whether/how the prosodic cues are effectively used in the sentence parsing process by Korean L2 Learners of English and English native speakers. In this experiment, five semantically biased semantic conditions were set up according to the gradient of the bias. Also, four prosodic conditions were set up. Targeting native speakers and Korean learners of English, the perception test was conducted and the response time was measured under the complex conditions(combining each semantic condition with each prosodic condition). Given the cooperating prosodic cues, Native speakers' response time shortened, while given the conflicting prosodic cues, their response time lengthened. However, any facilitation or interference effects on disambiguation by Korean L2 learners are not found. (Korea Aerospace University)

초록보기

This paper attempts to examine the two main characters, Christine and the Phantom, of The Phantom of the Opera from Lacanian theory of the Conscious and Unconscious. Christine's mental world is split between the subject of the unconscious and the subject controlled by unconscious thought. However, during the story unconscious thought increasingly plays a major role in controlling Christine. Finally, Christine chooses Raoul over the Phantom who guarantees worldly security, which proves that unconscious thought governs her. The Phantom is also split between the conscious subject as false being and the subject of unconscious thought. The Phantom has been frustrated by not being able to win the Other's recognition of his existence. Thus, he defies the Other and decides to create his own dream world. He manipulates situations to bring Christine into his dream world. However, after unexpectedly receiving passionate kisses from Christine, the Phantom turns into a good man as if by magic, and stops attacking Christine and Raoul but instead helps them to leave in safety. To sum up, both Christine and the Phantom ultimately remain as subordinate subjects to the order of the signifier; namely unconscious thought. (Daeshin University)

초록보기

The relational dynamics of Wordsworth's childhood exposure to his mother in The Prelude--presence and absence, life and death, union and separateness--are crucial to self-construction and inventiveness of imagination. He reveals, “I grew up/Fostered alike by beauty and by fear.” Wordsworth's ambivalent regard for his mother(nature) is explainable by the concept of maternity in Melanie Klein's theory. Examples of the cognitive dissonance in Klein's paranoid-schizoid position are throughout The Prelude. In showing the satisfactory feelings from his nurturing mother, the narrator reveals his good mother, declaring that she has been “The props of [his] affections.” Wordsworth also undergoes persecutory anxiety when he fears the retaliation of his bad mother (her death): his threatening experiences are implied well in the Winander boy episode. Two spots of time episodes in The Prelude show how the narrator recovers from self-reproach and guilty feelings in the depressive position, and recognizes gratitude and love for his mother(nature): His minds “are nourished and invisibly repaired.” (Hanbat National University)

초록보기

From 1811 to 1816, Shelley's reading in philosophy was largely skeptics, so he was influenced by skeptical thoughts. Naturally these thoughts formed the basis of his poetry as well as his ideas. In his early poems, Shelley mostly tried to express his desire for an ideal human life and for the achievement of human freedom in society in spite of the contradiction between reality and ideals. Over time, however, he identified discrepancies between his idealism and external reality, so he expressed this skepticism about idealism in Julian and Madallo. Shelley wrote Julian and Maddalo to review and to reconsider the problems of idealism through a dialogue between Julian, who believes in idealism, and Maddalo, who is a pessimist. Thus, Shelley shows through this poem that he is undergoing his own conflict of his idealistic optimism. However, Shelley's skeptical conflict strengthens his hope for the reform of society by scrupulously examining the world with a more realistic view whilst not avoiding reality. In the end, he does not neglect his responsibility as a poet to make the world a better one. (Hannam University)

초록보기

John Updike's so-called “Rabbit” series consists of five novels, Rabbit, Run(1961), Rabbit Redux(1971), Rabbit Is Rich(1981), Rabbit at Rest(1990) and “Rabbit Remembered”(2000). The main thematic concerns in the novels are largely related to such existential themes as rejection of systems, alienation, despair, nothingness, absurdity, awareness of death. Throughout his existential journey, Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom, the protagonist of the novels, rejects all the established values which negate his uniqueness and subjectivity and follows his inner imperatives in the present moment. What he finds at the end of his life is the importance of selfhood and historicity of his own life. He becomes Nietzschean Superman through the action of transcendence by finding out the importance of selfhood and historicity of his own life at the close of his life. Harry identifies his own existential way of life with Dalai Lama, Tibet's religious and divine leader in the manner that his selfhood is the very essence of godhood. The existential themes in the series concern Buddhist philosophy on the basis of the Dalai Lama motif. This writing focuses on comparing the existential themes to some thoughts of Buddhism; transcendence to nirvana, for-itself to nagarjuna, and nihilism to void. (Jeju National University)

초록보기

Anne Sexton, one of the pioneering American confessional poets, led a life as a typical “suburban housewife” in America during 1950's and the following decades, and gave in her poems vivid expression to a variety of painful experiences and innermost feelings in a patriarchal society. Indeed, most of her poems, deeply rooted in her existential condition as a sensitive female in the male-dominant society, confront squarely “reality and its hard facts.” While “Housewife” succinctly exemplifies how the housework oppresses women's lives, “Her Kind” enacts the female speaker's more challenging search for her new identity in more dramatic situations. In a more radical way than the two poems “Consorting with Angels” casts a doubt on the stereotyped distinction of femininity, gender, and body. In “In Celebration of My Uterus” the speaker, focusing on the genital organ as a source of her femininity, asserts female creativity and fertility. Though not an avowed feminist, she explored with extraordinary sensitivity, candor, and enthusiasm lots of tabooed subjects and has continued to serve as an exemplar for those who embarked on defining femininity in a new perspective. This paper discusses the sacredness of the poem of the Mexican-American, a Chicana writer, Ana Castillo. Chicana's identity is inseparable from spirituality. Spirituality is an absolute life guideline that answers the orphanhood wandering between their biological parents, Mexico and their adoptive parents, America. Castillo embodies the loose matriarchy, Xicanisma of healing and regeneration in the pride for the Aboriginal pedigree. In the mythical space of Chicana feminism, Coatlicue is Goddess of serpent symbolizing vitality. In the poem of Castillo, Coatlicue links to the Virgin of Guadalupe, the immortal mother of Chicana along with the Goddness of the Earth, Tonantzin. Finally, Guadalupe, embodied as a working woman living a modern life who takes off the transcendent divinity of Mother of the God, is the final version of the Chicana sacredness depicted by Castillo. 초록보기

This study explores the way in which Helen Edmundson's play, Mary Shelley, 2012, creates a sense of the subjective existence of women by recreating the historical context in their private lives. The choice of docu-fiction as a genre allows for the reality of women's subjective self-identity to be conveyed even more effectively, the portrayal of which has often been warped by the androcentric lens of history. Including both historically-documented characters and fictional characters that stir the imagination, the docu-fiction is uniquely placed to achieve this, in helping the audience to more readily visualize the lives of historical women, and in formulating a critical response to their situations. In the play, Mary Shelley is portrayed as a woman who sympathizes emotionally with her stepsisters, loves her lover with an ardent passion, and tries to piece together the records relating to her mother, finally creating her masterpiece, the novel 'Frankenstein'. By situating itself within a female historical context often passed over in patriarchal accounts of history, this play embodies the female voice, name, and self-identity obscured within those accounts. Using docu-fiction as a narrative device, Mary Shelley conducts a literary experiment, in which the historic records of women's lives are recalled and brought to life again to powerful effect. The aim of this paper is to explore the male speaker's voice in John Donne's Songs and Sonnets. Songs and Sonnets contains not only Donne's most complicated exploration of love but also the various fields of gender, politics, and society. Songs and Sonnets written in his early times is focused on the theme of negative and cynical love. In these poems the male speaker tries to find out his ideal and perfect love/woman, but he can't get it anywhere. It results in the absence of ideal love and the male speaker's negative thoughts for the identity of love and woman. The ideal woman is eventually replaced with realistic one, and persistent love with changeable one. There mainly reveals the male speaker's governing and control over women in Donne's early love poems. So diverse views of women in his poems are closely related with the patriarchal ideology. They are also connected with the political systems of contemporary England. Under the monarch of the Queen, Donne tries to express the desire to master women and possess the possibility of male-centered society. These potential intentions affect Donne to satirize the ideal love and resist the dominated power which is reigned by the Queen. (Hanbat National University)

초록보기

There has been much controversy over Dorian Gray's and, thus, Oscar Wilde's immorality in The Picture of Dorian Gray. Despite Dorian's tragic death clearly echoing a cause and effect sentiment, the novel never suggests that good does triumph over evil like a typical Victorian novel. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a departure from the 19th century realistic and didactic literature. This debate is also deeply rooted in modern aestheticism: art for art's sake. Critics note that Wilde is heavily influenced by Walter Pater and his aestheticism, and the perversity of the novel is a reflection of the immoral aestheticism of both Wilde and Pater. Wilde, however, is not simply championing an aesthetic of sin and hedonism. In the novel, Wilde suggests a new kind of writing before modernist writers. He believed in the potential transformation from the dichotomous virtuous hypocrite into a whole person that includes both good and evil sides of a human being. Both Dorian and Wilde fail in this endeavor of self-development into a free being incorporating the repressed dualistic human nature. This book, however, clearly shows that Wilde as a belated Romantic has attempted to suggest a new way of writing, synthesizing good and evil, transgressing life and art against fixed values and rigid morals and daring to act out such forbidden things as homosexuality in the Victorian society.
