The purpose of this study is to examine the difference of recognition on the factor of Korean readability between Korean language teachers and academically-oriented foreign Korean language learners. To look into the difference of recognition on the factor of readability between the two groups, first, this author carried out a survey employing Likert's scale, and the results of it underwent exploratory factor analysis by using SPSS 21. According to the analysis results, the difference of recognition was found between the two groups about the readability factor. Education on the readability of Korean language is distinctive from that about readability in either English or Korean because the subjects of learning are second language learners. If teachers properly understand the difference of those learners' recognition and their distinctiveness, they will be able to provide efficient education for Korean reading. The purpose of this study is to investigate the status quo and perceptions of mobile learning of Korean language learners at Chinese universities. The subjects of this study were students who had studied Korean at Chinese universities, with a total of 151 students surveyed. The questionnaire consisted of 30 items mainly about the status quo of mobile learning use and the perception of mobile learning.
The results were as follows. The Korean language learners at Chinese universities used published Korean textbooks(70.9%) the most, most of them had a smartphone(83.4%), and almost all of them had mobile learning in their dormitory(94.7%) on campus. The most used the method for mobile learning was real-time streaming content(70.2%), the most used skills in the learning field by using mobile devices was listening(61.6%) and vocabulary(61.6%), and the foremost reason for the use of mobile learning was mobility and ubiquity(78.8%). The erceptions of mobile learning were generally positive(M=5.87). The Perceptions of 'system accessibility (M=6.05)' and 'ease of use(M=6.13)' were relatively higher than 'usefulness (M=5.50)' and 'intention to use(M=5.78)'. Based on the results of this study, actual data on mobile learning by Korean learners at Chinese universities were provided. (BNU-HKBU United International College)

This study investigated the teachers' perception of real-time remote Korean language classes. The Korean teachers' perception in the study included how they evaluated the effectiveness of real-time remote Korean language classes and how they perceive the changing educational environment. 60 Korean teachers participated in the online survey and they were divided into 3 groups according to their teaching experiences (1-5 years, 6-9 years, and 10 years above). The results showed that Korean language teachers had generally negative perception of the real-time remote korean language classes and the change to the online classroom environment regardless of their teaching experience. For the evaluation of real-time classes, they showed a negative perception of interaction, assessment implementation and excellence, learning performance and satisfaction, and the time and effort in preparing or teaching classes except teaching grammar and comprehension skills. For changing educational environment, they responded that they were adjusting to the online class environment, but they still felt uncomfortable about the change, lacking the sense of reality in class, and anxious about their job security as a teacher. In result, they recognized that they needed to focus their efforts on developing their capabilities to adopt to the changing educational environment. (Ewha Womans University)

This research aims to study the unit configuration method of Korean language textbook into text-semiotics method. In this study, it specifically examined how the texts forming a unit of Korean language textbook has the intertextual relations. To this end, the following analysis procedures were conducted in this study. First, it classified the subject texts forming the unit, and examined that which teaching and learning unit composes the subject texts. Second, it identifies its pattern where and how the teaching and learning contents appears in each subject text. Third, it figured out whether the element in the preceding subject text appears in the following subject text and, if so, what kind of relation it has. It is to examine how the cohesion of formal layer and the coherence of semantic layer form in textbook text. Finally, based on this, it examined that the input and output were structured in the textbook unit from the perspective of second language acquisition. It showed that the unit of analysis subject combined the narration and teaching and learning contents of a specific person, and repeatedly entered the target sentence and communication function with the story of the person. As a result, the texts within the unit of analysis subject had a strong intertextual relation each other, and it was verified that this was an efficient way of providing input to learners and teachers. In the new era, along with the belt and road initiative is being promoted, China has put forward higher requirements for minority languages education. In the development of Korean Education for more than 70 years, the study of pronunciation education is still relatively weak compared with grammar and vocabulary. In order to grasp the current situation of Korean pronunciation education as a whole and promote the development of this field systematically, it is necessary to study the history of this field. Based on the volume by volume search of specific journals and CNKI, 85 studies on Korean pronunciation education were selected as the analysis objects. These studies are classified and analyzed according to the standards of publication year, form, theme content, etc., and the theme content is further analyzed according to the nature and objective, content, method, evaluation of the researches. On this basis, the prospect of Korean pronunciation education research in the future is put forward. (Communication University of China)

This study aims to examine the applicability of differential item functioning (DIF), a widely used concept in psychology, to Korean language education. The use of two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) DIF as an analytic tool is also introduced and evaluated. Toward this end, data were collected from 122 Japanese female students to measure the effects of a study-abroad experience in Korea on their intercultural communication competence. A two-way ANOVA was used for the statistical testing of DIF. The results indicated that eight items functioned differently, depending on whether or not the students had undergone the experience of studying abroad in Korea. Through item content analysis, one item “foreign language phobia” was confirmed to be a bias item. Although there were no differences in the t-test and correlation results before and after the application of DIF, the reliability, t-value, and correlation coefficient for “foreign language phobia” changed. The results suggest that applying two-way ANOVA DIF to Korean language education research may increase the reliability and validity of questionnaire-based analyses. (Showa Women's University)

The purpose of this study is to examine the use of discourse markers according to the level of burden of subject in interview discourse, focus on Korean native speakers and Myanmar Korean advanced learners. For this, the study conducted interviews with 15 participants in each group. The subjects of the interview were divided into upper, middle, and lower according to the level of burden of subject, and there are a total of three. A total of 6739 syntactic words were produced by native Korean speakers, and the total number of discourse markers was 752 times, so one discourse marker was used in 8.96 syntactic words. Meanwhile, in the case of learners, a total of 3082 syntactic words were produced, and a total of 722 discourse markers were used, so one discourse marker was used for 4.41 words.
As a result of the study, Korean native speakers used the most discourse markers when the subject had a high burden, but the learners used discourse markers regardless of the level of burden of subject. Korean native speakers used various functional discourse markers depending on the subject of the interview, but learners repeatedly used limited discourse markers. Interestingly, when learners couldn't think of the next content well, or when they took a long time to think, switching to their native language occurred. At this time, learners were using discourse markers in their mother tongue that do not exist in Korean. In many cases, Korean native speakers speak two or more discourse markers combined, and this can be said to be a characteristic of the Korean native speaker. (Ewha Womans University)

This paper aims to analysis the characteristics of language textbooks used by Western missionaries in early 20th century through the comparison between Korean Fifty Helps and Japanese Fifty Helps.
The Korean Fifty Helps written by Annie Baird was very popular textbook to Western missionaries, while revising six times from 1896 to 1926. Pastor Winn wrote Japanese Fifty Helps by adapting Annie Baird's learning method during the Japanese colonial period as missionaries in Korea were under the burden of learning Japanese to communicate with Japanese officers.
The reason Korean Fifty Helps had been used as a language textbook for a long time was that it prioritized the acquisition of expressive whole sentences to learning of grammatical forms. Meanwhile Japanese Fifty Helps lost the learning effect of acquiring whole sentential expressions by matching them with Korean words by small units. In addition, it missed a meaningful practical processes in which learners could produce various expression according to their situation.
The way of learning sentential expressions prior to grammatical forms is connected with modern communicative teaching methods in language learning. As the characteristics of Korean Fifty Helps are reflected quite a lot in modern Korean textbooks, it is worth saying that Korean Fifty Helps has become a predecessor of Korean textbooks for foreigners. The purpose of this study is to verify the effectiveness of real-time online video lessons by analyzing the satisfaction of learners and their academic achievement of real-time online Korean class students, in relation to the non-face-to-face, online classes that began in March 2020. This research analyzed the academic performance of Korean language students in the spring and summer semesters of 2019 and 2020 from the Korean Language Institute at J University located in Jeonju-si. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, there was no significant difference in the academic achievement on the intermediate test and post-test between the groups. Second, surveys regarding the satisfaction of leaners have shown that they are in a 'normal level' of satisfaction in all areas. Also, in particular, 'overall satisfaction' is in near 'satisfaction', showing the highest rate of satisfaction, while 'satisfaction' with communication' is in a 'normal' level with the lowest rate of satisfaction. This study is significant in the sense that it has verified the effect of real-time video classes and analyzed the learner satisfaction at the same time. (Jeonbuk National University)

This study qualitatively examines the identity development of three non-heritage Korean language learners participating in a semester study abroad program in South Korea. The data in the present study were collected through weekly journals and pre-, mid-, and post-study abroad interviews. In a narrative inquiry, the analysis indicates that the non-heritage American students developed their identity as follows: (1) first-hand experience of the target language community helped to discover and to verify participants' identities; (2) experiences in South Korea positively influenced the ethnic identity of an Asian American student; (3) study abroad can also affect students' identity negatively developing foreigner identities especially in case they are not prepared culturally and linguistically; (4) the language learner's imagined communities became real communities through study abroad experiences and it motivated the participant to invest more on Korean language learning and (5) the participants had different experiences with native speakers how foreigner-like they look to the eyes of the target language community. This study contributes to a more comprehensive theory of Korean language learners' identity development. (Chonnam National University)
