1A Study of Corresponding Words in TED Talks Using Word2vec

Word2vec is a widely used program that is composed of a group of related models used in the generation of word embeddings. These models are useful in the analysis of word correlations. The purpose of this research is to establish its usefulness in English education. In this research, the Continuous Bag-of-Words (CBOW) model was used to determine cosine similarity. The selected materials for this research are TED Talks on education. Out of the 323 available clips in the education section, 292 were chosen. Using Wordsmith 7, 40 of the most frequently used words were singled out. The 40 words were divided by four parts of speech: 10 nouns, 10 verbs, 10 adjectives, and 10 adverbs. These included only content words; function words were excluded. Using Word2vec, 10 words from the target words were displayed in a vector chart. These correlated words all share the highest cosine similarity with their target word. They reveal unique word patterns. Some word pairs are collocations, and others are synonyms and antonyms. The identifying and classification of words can help the learners develop their vocabulary, and how to properly use words in sentences.

The study investigated the effects of a short-term study abroad program on Korean university students' perception of their English competence, cultural and interpersonal experiences, challenges and learning. A mixed-method approach was employed to collect data involving pre- and post-questionnaires, screening interviews, and students' in-depth individual interviews. Forty-one participants of a one-month study abroad program completed both questionnaires and ten students had retrospective interviews after the program. The results of questionnaires suggested that most of the participants gained significant confidence in their English speaking and listening, thus, lessened their anxiety when communicating in English. Interview data analysis indicated that most participants: 1) perceived their cultural and linguistic competence increased; 2) solved their interpersonal conflicts by developing their own strategies; and 3) obtained new cultural experiences that they deemed invaluable. Follow-up or longitudinal studies in consecutive years would be necessary to further develop effective programs and evaluative tools of the programs.

The 2015 Revised National English Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 2015) directs learners to understand both their own and other cultures. Accordingly, this study examines the types of cultural content in 11 8th grade textbooks using Hong and Sohn's modified category (2018) of Bierstedt's material, norms, and ideas (1997). The background of cultural content was analyzed with Chao's classifications (2011). The extent of reflection of the four core competencies in cultural activities was examined with a five-point Likert scale checklist. The results showed that all the textbooks present culture on 'norms,' whereas one textbook does not include content on 'material' and two textbooks on 'ideas.' There were more contents from international and universal culture compared to target and source culture. Accordingly, it is necessary to present diverse culture contents in a balanced manner to enhance learners' pride in their own culture. More helpful instructional guidelines are also needed to help teachers enhance learners' core competencies through culture teaching as intended in the curriculum.

4Korean Students' Perceptions of Singing Along to Disney Soundtracks in EFL Classrooms

The current study aims to investigate Korean EFL students' perceptions of singing along to movie soundtracks. This study also compares their perceptions of different music-based activities. For the study, 201 college students were recruited and divided into three groups: Listening and Singing group (n = 79), Listening and Writing group (n = 65), and Listening Only group (n = 57). During 15 weeks, the participants engaged in different English learning activities using music. Before and after the treatment, they completed pre- and post-perception surveys. Paired t-tests and one-way ANOVAs were employed for data analysis. Findings revealed significant mean score changes between the pre- and post-surveys. All participants in the three groups positively changed their perceptions of English learning after engaging in music-based activities. In addition, significant group differences were also witnessed, indicating that singing activities has more positive effects on Korean EFL students' perceptions of English learning. This study will provide new perspectives in EFL fields by motivating and inspiring EFL teachers to enrich their teaching methods and techniques.

This study investigated the perception of native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) in team teaching as they develop a collaborative relationship with local Korean English language teachers (KETs) in Korea. A total of 31 NESTs currently teaching at elementary and secondary schools in the metropolitan area of Seoul participated in this research study through a questionnaire, and the subsequent data set was collected and analyzed. The result suggested that the successful implementation of team teaching relied on how frequently NESTs and KETs discussed collaborative teaching materials to develop effective team teaching strategies. Based on the teaching style of the collaborative model, the NESTs involved in team teaching showed a high degree of satisfaction. However, for the 'NESTs teach, KETs observe' model, NESTs showed a low level of satisfaction in collaborating with KETs. Furthermore, NESTs expressed difficulties in working with many KETs. Based on the findings, three realistic approaches must be considered for the implementation of effective collaborative team teaching.

This paper examines Korean EFL college students' perception on reading and how it differs according to their reading proficiency. The paper also investigates the students' use of reading strategies and how it differs depending on their English reading proficiency. In addition, the relationship between the students' use of reading strategies and their reading proficiency is examined. The study also identifies the most significant reading strategy affecting the students' English reading proficiency. A total of 91 university students participated in the research. The results showed that the participants perceived vocabulary as their weakest area of English and reading as their primary area for improvement. The results also revealed that problem solving strategies were the most frequently used strategies regardless of the participants' reading proficiency. Global strategies were significantly correlated with the participants' reading proficiency. The most significant factor affecting their English reading proficiency was found to be the use of strategy, 'I have a purpose in mind when I read'. Some implications and limitations are discussed.

This study investigated the perceptions of using automatic translators (AT) for English learning. For this study, 58 Korean EFL university students participated. This study employed a mixed method and data were collected through survey questionnaires and reflection essays about using AT for English learning. Results showed that almost all students reported using AT frequently. Results also showed that students positively expected to organize what they want to say more clearly by using AT. They also expected they could save time for reading and writing in English. In addition, they also showed they needed to use AT sophisticatedly to improve their English reading and writing. On the other hand, students did not positively expect improvements in their English grammar and reading skills. Among four factors, perceptions towards improvements in quality of their work in English and perceptions towards usefulness for learning were higher than perceptions towards English skill improvement and self-satisfaction towards using AT. Students' reflection essays also represented ample information about their experiences and perceptions about using AT for their English learning. The results suggest that instructors should provide guidelines and training for using AT for students' better learning.

The purpose of this study is to identify first graders' preferences for storybooks and informational books and to analyze the factors that determine their preferences. For this study, 25 students in Seoul G elementary school participated in the preference survey. The preference survey consisted of multiple choice and descriptive questions and was conducted before and after English book reading classes. According to the results, students preferred storybooks over informational books, and their preference for storybooks became stronger after the English book reading class. The analysis of factors that determine their preferences revealed that key determinants were related to content, aesthetic, form, and learning. When the determinants are carefully considered in book selection, both storybooks and information books can be an effective and interesting reading material for students to learn English. This study has significance in that it provides valuable insights into understanding book preference determinants when we need to consider the selection of storybooks and informational books.

The purpose of the study is to compare the impact of L2 Motivational Self, ideal L2 self and ought-to L2 self, on English achievement with a mediating role of English learning strategies with a focus on the types of high schools(both general high school and special purpose high school). A total of 518 high school students from five major cities/provinces participated in this study and completed questionnaires. The results are as follows. First, students from special purpose high schools scored significantly higher in ideal L2 self, English learning strategies and English achievement than students from general high schools. Second, both high schools demonstrated the same in which ideal L2 self affected English achievement through the mediating role of English learning strategies but the degree of impact was different. Instead, ought-to L2 self only affected students from general high school. Ought-to L2 self increased English achievement and English learning strategies played a full mediating effect. The study identified the relationships between L2 Motivational Self and English learning and reaffirmed the importance of ideal L2 self. The study also suggests that ought-to L2 self should not always be underestimated since it supports some students.

The purpose of this study is to investigate sociocultural factors accountable to English education in South Korea during the Sixth National Curriculum. By analyzing newspaper articles from two major newspapers, Donga Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo, we classified a total of 538 English education-related articles into five main categories: 1) General English education (or Non-school English education); 2) English learning medium; 3) Public English education; 4) Private English education, and 5) Korean and native English teachers. The Sixth National Curriculum period laid the foundation for the transformation of English education, such as the invitation of native English foreign teachers to enhance students' communicative competence, the introduction of listening tests for the College Scholastic Ability Test, and the implementation of elementary English education. However, these top-down educational measures also provoked negative effects nationwide, including widening “English-divide” between social classes in Korea. Educational suggestions are also provided.
