The purpose of this study was to identify ELF-oriented features presented in middle school English textbooks based on the 2015 revised national curriculum of Korea. A total of 241 dialogues and 242 reading texts from 30 textbooks were analyzed from the perspective of ELF. The following findings were derived from the analysis of the data. First, the textbooks largely failed to represent the type of ELF interactions commonly observed in real world settings; most of the dialogues involved English native speakers and Koreans only, excluding outer circle speakers and expanding circle speakers other than Koreans. Second, nearly all the sound files of the dialogues and the reading texts were recorded in American English regardless of the linguistic and cultural backgrounds of the speakers represented in the materials. Third, the reading texts reflected cultures of various countries and regions around the world in a relatively balanced way, although certain regions were still somewhat underrepresented. Lastly, some of the reading texts contained cultural content that could potentially promote learners' interculturality; however, the ways cultures were described in the texts rarely represented critical multiculturalism. Based on the findings, this paper suggested some ways to incorporate ELF-oriented features into English textbooks.

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether and how the effects of animation recording activities assisted explicit pronunciation instruction on second grade Korean middle school students' English pronunciation and speaking proficiency. To this end, three research questions were posed, and answers to the research questions were examined using a total of 30 Korean second grade middle school students. The results demonstrate that the implementation of the animation recording activity was effective in improving the overall English pronunciation of students, particularly on pronunciation features as deletion, reduction. linking, and intonation. Furthermore, this implementation has positively affected students' attitudes and perceptions toward English learning. Although the animation recording activity did not significantly affect the overall speaking proficiency of students, it positively influenced students' speaking fluency. Research implications were also discussed.

In 2013, North Korea publicized a new middle school National Curriculum. This new curriculum brought about many changes within the North Korean education system. This current study examined the new North Korean middle school English textbook, comparing it with comparable textbooks of South Korea to assist in the understanding of current ELT practices. Corpus-based analysis was conducted in order to compare English textbooks from the first grades of middle school in both North Korea and South Korea. The research outcomes revealed similarities between the textbooks from North Korea and South Korea in many regards. Both the North Korean English textbook and South Korean English textbooks included words related to the use of computers and technologies. Moreover, both North Korean and South Korean English textbooks had vocabulary relating to the conventional lives of middle school students. The North Korean textbook, however, included limited types of verb inflections, when compared to South Korean textbooks. Meanwhile, only 12% of the words in the North Korean English textbook were inclusive of the basic word list at the middle school level in the 2009 Revised National Curriculum in South Korea. The results of this research are expected to contribute not only to the development of a unified curriculum for South and North Korea, but also to supporting North Korean defectors in South Korean Schools at a future point in time.

Online courses tend to have higher dropout rates than traditional offline classes. To determine the causes of this phenomenon, a diagnostic questionnaire for measuring the academic literacy of online English learners was developed in this study. The survey questionnaire, 'Academic Literacy for Online English Learners', consisted of questions on university system literacy, digital literacy, information literacy, and language literacy. A survey was conducted on 215 English learners at K Cyber University, and interviews with 11 students were administered for triangulation. To analyze the questionnaire results, descriptive statistics, t-tests, and ANOVA were conducted. According to the survey results, the participants were in relatively low levels in the following academic literacy aspects: 1) how to use the university's Learning Management System and the counseling/support systems. 2) how to solve network failures or security problems 3) how to back up/restore files or install/delete software for their study 4) English (speaking, writing, and listening) literacy for college classes. The results also showed that the participants in their 50s had significantly lower levels of overall academic literacy, digital literacy, and information literacy than those in their 20s and 30s. Subsequent qualitative analyses also supported these quantitative results. Based on these findings, some recommendations are made to prevent dropout of online English learners.
