1Characterizing the English Preposition Upon

This study aims to clarify the conditions under which the English preposition upon is employed in newspaper English. English dictionaries and grammar books, whether for general purposes or specific purposes, have not been very successful in providing a comprehensive documentation of this preposition. The present study, drawing upon texts from the archive of The New York Times, shows how occurences of this preposision involve a variety of factors on different levels of representation. The discussion will be on [upon+gerund], [verb+upon], [be+upon+noun], [noun+upon+noun], [once upon], and semantic contrast between upon and on. It will be demonstrated that upon, despite its apparently small range of utility, plays an active, unique role in journalism English. Some diachronic changes in the language of The New York Times will also be examined.

2The Acoustic Quality of Canadian Raising

Canadian English is seen as different from American English. Canadian Raising(CR) is well known among Canadian English features. It is also known that there is a difference in pronunciation by the influence of Great Vowel Shift(GVS). However, the quality and origins of CR have not been well studied in detail through acoustic observation. Therefore, it is meaningful to clarify the difference through the acoustic experiment of the pronunciation between the American speaker and the Canadian speaker. The greatest difference appears between American English and Canadian English in pronouncing the “Ripe” vowel when a voiceless consonant follows a diphthong. The quality of Canadian Raising will be found through acoustic comparison and analysis. If teachers recognize when they teach students that there are various pronunciation phenomena in many English speaking countries and convey the quality of specific sounds to students through this study, it will be helpful for students to communicate with people from other countries in World Englishes. If they speak and listen after knowing that there are variations depending on the dialects, even if using the same English, they can communicate more smoothly and correctly.

One major problem raised by college students who read for English courses is that the course per se may be too general and not related to their own disciplines. It is compulsory for all college students to complete a credit-bearing EAP and/or ESP course before they graduate. However, many universities in Hong Kong merely offer an EAP course which covers generic academic writing skills in English. It is crucial to develop different tailor-made EAP courses for their corresponding majors in order to motivate and benefit their studies. Therefore, this paper will examine the ways stipulated by the Cambridge Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA), which is an advanced blend of theory and practice that provides professional development for teachers, to devise a course that benefits and reflects a specific group of college students who major in Business at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Results are generated from primary research, my practical experience as well as collection of secondary data. This paper will also draw upon examples of different curricula for evaluation.

The purpose of this study is to examine the most effective learning method for L2 learners to acquire target language by the specially devised input and output tasks. In addition, this study aims to investigate how the results of each task were influenced by the L2 learners' motivation. For this study, experiments were implemented with 100 female college students. The students were divided into three different task groups: an input, an output, and a control group. The students first completed the motivation survey. Then the input group was provided with mixed input tasks (visual enhancement + meaning-orientation). The output group was provided with output tasks (a picturecued production task), and the control group followed the general tasks of the regular class which were a combination of input and output tasks. The input and output tasks were repeated three times with different reading passages. A posttest was administered immediately following the treatments. As a result, the output task group showed much better performance of acquiring target grammar than the input task group did. In addition, some attributes of L2 learners' motivation promoted the L2 learners' performance of the acquired target grammar.

With the era of globalization and the 4th industrial revolution upon us, the industrial sector has expanded the range of its own influence not only in many nations but also in various regions. In order to keep pace with these trends, English teaching methods that have been embraced by most universities in Korea are now facing fundamental problems. Several educational experts pointed out various deficiencies because they believed that traditional teaching methods could not nurture properly trained human resources with qualified talents. First of all, I maintain that it is necessary to find a new way of teaching and encouraging students which can allow them to actively check the level of appropriateness of their developmental learning process. With the advent of the Flip learning method and the MOOC system, it has become possible for a student to be exposed to the process of finding one's own learning process and customizing the direction of learning. These new methods can also serve as the basis for developing the potential to allow students to keep abreast of the transformations occurring in society as it transitions to the future. In this sense, I think another blueprint for English education is urgently needed that reflects the new course operation system to which Flip learning and MOOC adhere. Thus, in this paper, I propose the FLMR model approach integrating the two methods, and attempt to find the most effective English teaching method that simultaneously covers the areas of humanities and science. Moreover, I am confident that the model can provide an important foundation for EST education and a new direction in English classrooms because it reflects not only the properties of humanities majors, but also those of science-related fields, without leaning to heavily in the direction of EAP, which used to be the bedrock for English classes in the past.
