The maturity and spawning of the yellow goosefish Lophius litulon were studied using samples collected monthly from January to December 2018 from the coastal waters of Korea. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI), total length (TL) at 50%, 75%, and 97.5% group maturity, egg diameter and fecundity. The spawning period was from January to June. The size of eggs spawned was between 0.30 to 1.28 mm. Fecundity varied between 328,314 to 1,624,783 eggs. The percentage of sexually mature females estimated from a logistic function was over 50% at 48.67 cm TL, 75% at 56.76 cm TL and 97.5% at 74.89 cm TL.

The reproductive biology of largehead hairtail Trichiurus japonicus, from near Jeju Island, Korea was investigated based on 4,384 individuals collected by commercial vessel from November 2016 to October 2019. There were more female specimens than male specimens (2.64:1). T. japonicus preanal lengths (PL) ranged from 10.5 to 53.5 cm; the relationships between PL and body weight (BW) were BW=0.0103PL3.1293 for females and BW=0.0106PL3.1251 for males. Monthly changes in gonadosomatic index were analyzed to estimate spawning season. The spawning period ranged from June to November. The size-frequency distribution of eggs suggested that T. japonicus exhibits multiple-spawning during a spawning period. The minimum size of females at maturity was 18.2 cm, while the size at sexual maturity was 25.0 cm.

We investigated the maturity and spawning dynamics of chub mackerel Scomber japonicus in Korean waters using samples collected by a large purse seine fishery from January 2013 to December 2017. We analyzed sex ratio, monthly maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI), Fulton's condition factor (K), and fork length at 50% group maturity. Spawning occurred from March to June, with a peak in May. We detected a significant difference in sex ratio (χ2 test, P<0.05). The relationship between fork length and body weight was expressed as BW=0.0025FL3.4693. We estimated 50% group maturity at a female fork length of 29.3 cm.

The maturity and spawning of pacific sand eels Ammodytes japonicus, was investigated using samples collected by gill net in coastal waters near Donghae, Gangwon-do, from January 2017 to December 2018. Monthly changes were analyzed in maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI), egg diameter, fecundity (F), and total length (TL) at 50% group maturity. The average TLs of female and male A. japonicus were 18.5 and 18.1 cm, respectively. The spawning period was from November to March, with the peak from December to February based on monthly changes in GSI and maturity stages. The egg diameter during the spawning-capable stage was 300-1000 (main mode 500-600) μm. Fecundity ranged from 6,411 eggs at 16.7 cm fork length to 45,771 eggs at 24.7 cm fork length. The relationship between TL and F was F=0.00005TL4.2715 (R2=0.7216), such that F increased with TL. TL at 50% group maturity was estimated to be 15.1 cm for both sexes.

Filefish Thamnaconus modestus has seen a sharp decline in their catch, we must strive for continuous resource management. We investigated the maturation and spawning of T. modestus by trawl net and set net from January 2018 to November 2019, off Jeju Is. and in coastal waters of North Gyeongsang Province's Korea. We analyzed monthly change total length (cm), gonadosomatic index (GSI) and maturity stages, egg diameter (mm), the relations fecundity and total length. GSI for Jeju Is. was the highest in April (3.17, 2.43), and decreased from July to 1.73 in August and GyeongBuk's GSI was the highest in Apri l (1.86, 2.58), followed by the high in May and the sharp decline in September, which is 0.23. Using a histological method, the annual reproductive cycle of T. modestus can be divided into 5stage in females; the early growing stage (Jan.-Mar.), late growing stage (Apr.-May), Mature stage, spent stage (Oct.), Recover and resting stage (Nov.-Jan.).We estimate the TL at 50% maturity as 24.1cm for female, fecundity ranged from 560,044 eggs at 23.4cm total length to 1,580,387 eggs at 36.6.cm TL.

The maturation and spawning of white crocker Pennahia argentatus were investigated using samples collected in the Southern Sea of Korea from January to December 2018. We analysed monthly changes in maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI), total length (TL) at 50% group maturity. The spawning period was May to July. Fecundity varied between 71,627 and 888,041 eggs. The relationship between the fecundity and TL of the fish was expressd in the fecundity equation as F=0.2198TL4.2784 (r2=0.8423). The percentage of sexually mature females estimated from a logistic function was over 50% for the size group 19.33 cm (total length, TL).

The maturation and spawning of red seabream Pagrus major were investigated using 1,014 samples collected monthly from January to December of 2018, in the South Sea of Korea. Based on monthly changes in maturity stage and gonadosomatic index, the spawning period was estimated to be between April and August, with peak spawning occuring from May to June. Fecundity varied between 228,996 and 4,544,948 eggs. The relationship between fecundity (F) and fork length (FL) in this species can be expressed by the equation F=0.4869FL3.9452 (R2=0.7448). Using a logistic function, the percentage of sexually mature females was estimated to be over 50% for fish with a FL of 35.3 cm.

Determination of the precise size at sexual maturity is very important for science-based stock assessment and fisheries resource management. In this study, two different models, (1) a visual method and (2) a gonadosomatic index (GSI) method, were employed to estimate length at sexual maturity of the small yellow croaker Larimichthys polyactis in the Yellow Sea of Korea. The visual method is a common qualitative method using visual gonadal identification. Conversely, the GSI method is a quantitative method using the GSI, which can be easily and precisely collected. We compared results from these methods to determine the best approach, and to examine the practicality of the GSI method. Logistic regression of the maturity ogive was conducted using a general linear model (GLM) with the R statistics program. Also, the bootstrapped 95% confidence intervals of all estimates were calculated. The best-fit model was the visual method (RMc 2 =0.805, AUC=0.989, L50=15.1). Among models using the GSI method, the model computing GSIref=0.94 was the best-fit model (RMc 2 =0.792, AUC=0.989, L50=15.2). There was no significant difference between the two models, evidencing the effectiveness and accuracy of the GSI method.

The purpose of this study was to provide information about annual variations in catch size and changes in reproductive biology in the common octopus Octopus vulgaris, a commercially important species. Samples were collected from coastal waters off Gyeongnam, Korea, by coastal trap and coastal complex fishery from February to December 2018. Octopus vulgaris have been decreasing in this region since 2007 and catch prices have been increasing. The mantle length (ML) of O. vulgaris ranged from 1.2 to 21.2 cm and body weight ranged from 42.6 to 5,537 g. The sex ratio differed significantly from what was expected, at 0.45:0.55 (P<0.05). Mature females were found from February to December, except in October and November, and males occurred from February to December, except in October. The gonadosomatic index value was higher from May to September than in other months. The total number of eggs in fecund individuals ranged from 40,280 in 578.1 g of body weight to 138,994 in 1,666.5 g of body weight. The relationship between body weight and fecundity was F=76.486BW1.0087 (r2=0.7897). At 50% group maturity, average weight was estimated to be 636.35 g, while it was 969.30 g at 75% maturity and 1736.55 g at 97.5% maturity. This study highlights changes in catch size and reproductive biology between 2007 and 2018. These results provide basic evidence that may be used to establish regulatory policy for O. vulgaris fisheries.

Dragonet fish (Callionymidae), living in benthic upper 900 m of all subtropical, tropical and temperate oceans, comprises 200 species in 20 genera worldwide, of which 18 species in 6 genera occur in Korea. Although dragonet fish plays an important role in linking between top predators and lower trophic levels, there are only few studies about their early life history. Herein, we present molecular and morphological data on larvae and juveniles of Bathycallionymus kaianus (Gunther, 1880) collected from the Korean waters. During 2016 to 2018, one preflexion larvae [2.69 in total length (TL)], three flexion larvae (3.65 and 4.77 mm TL), six postflexion larvae (6.07 and 7.94 mm TL), and three juveniles (10.81 and 12.26 mm TL) were collected in the East Sea, Korea Strait, and Jeju Island using Bongo net. Of them, 13 individuals were identified through molecular markers (COI or 16S rRNA) and morphologically described. The larvae of B. kaianus are well distinguished from other species of Callionymidae in melanophore distribution, body shape and development of preopercular spine. It was very similar to larvae of two Repomucenus species, R. valenciennei and R. virgis, but was clearly distinguished in melanophore distribution, preopercular spine development, and head shape.
