통합적 수행 평가 (Integrated Performance Assessment, IPA)는 표준 중심 평가로서, 학생들이 21세기 외국어 교육을 위해 설정된 표준에 얼마만큼 도달하였는지를 평가함과 더불어, 교실 내 교수 및 평가의 실행에 있어서 보다 매끄러운 연계를 도모하기 위해 개발된 평가다. 하지만 현재까지 미국 내에서 통합적 수행 평가가 대학 레벨, 특히 한국어 교육 환경에 적용된 경우는 매우 드물다. 따라서 본 연구는 미국내 대학 수준 한국어 프로그램에서의 통합적 수행 평가 도입의 실현가능성을 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그 첫번째 단계로서 2019년 봄학기에 샘플 수행 평가 과제 개발 및 채택이 중급 수준 한국어 교실에서 시행되었으며, 통합적 수행 평가에 대한 학생들의 경험 및 인식, 태도에 대한 조사가 학기말에 설문 조사를 통해 이루어졌다. 연구 결과는 통합적 수행 평가라는 대안적인, 표준 중심의 평가가 이미 확립된 교과과정을 토대로 미리 채택된 교과서를 사용하고 있는 대학 수준의 한국어 프로그램에 효과적으로 도입될 수 있음을 보여주었다. 또한 설문조사 결과는 새로 채택된 통합적 수행 평가가 학생들로부터 평가의 다양한 측면에 있어서 긍정적인 반응을 이끌어냈을 뿐만 아니라, 기존에 사용하고 있던 수행평가보다 선호되었음을 확증하였다. Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA) was developed as a standards-based assessment to assess students’ progress in attaining the Standards (for Foreign language Learning in the 21st Century) and foster a seamless connection between classroom instruction and assessment practices. To date, however, it was rarely adopted at the post-secondary level, especially in Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL) settings such as Korean. Thus, the current study aims to investigate the feasibility of implementing the IPA in a college-level Korean language program in the U.S. The first step of developing and implementing sample IPA tasks was carried out in Spring 2019 in two intact, intermediate-level Korean language classrooms (N = 22) at a public university in the U.S., and students’ experiences, perceptions, and attitudes towards the newly adopted IPA were examined using a survey questionnaire. The findings suggested that implementing an alternative, standards-based assessment, in the format of the IPA, is quite viable and feasible at the post-secondary Korean language program setting with an established curriculum and a pre-selected textbook series. Also, the survey results confirmed that the newly adopted IPA was well-received by the students and favored over the old format of performance assessment. (Emory University)

The purpose of this paper is to propose a method for teaching '-다' style to Korean learners by using “Consciousness-Raising Tasks”, which consists of requiring learners to solve grammar rules problems through information exchange and interaction among themselves. Among the typical sentence endings that Korean Language learners are exposed to, the '-다' style generates continuous errors even at the intermediate level due to the complexity of the rules and lack of practice. The study reviewed the types of exercises and activities currently adopted by most textbooks and proposed teaching procedures and a series of tasks for Level 3 learners based on “Consciousness-Raising Tasks” as an alternative or supplementary student materials. This study analyzed 784 articles related to error analysis research on Korean Language for Chinese learners, which can be searched by RISS from 2011 to the time of conducting this study. Topic modeling and language network analysis method was used to help analyze large-scale studies systematically and provide objective scientific data and consistent quantitative data. In this paper, Chapter 1 outlines the research background and the necessity of this research. Chapter 2 introduces the analysis method of topic modeling and language network in detail. Chapter 3 conducts an analysis on previous research on detailed topics, main word pairs, linguistic knowledge structure, and keyword network on error analysis research with the purpose of analyzing the characteristics of the study trend. Chapter 4 proposes future research directions and feasibility suggestions based on the results of this study. (Inha University)

The purpose of this study is to analyze the research trends of elementary, middle and high school students among KSL learners from the perspective of procedural literature analysis, and further present the direction of follow-up research based on the results of the analysis. It has been more than a decade since the government-led policy on KSL learners for school-age began, and it is necessary to look at the trends in research on KSL learners during school years and analyze the tendency of the research subject. As the focus of preceding studies related to this was on trend analysis, the focus was placed on describing the percentage of research topics in each year through a quantitative approach, and the subjects of the studies included adult learners, or often limited to specific academic journals or dissertations. Therefore, this study included both dissertation and academic journal papers for trend analysis of KSL learners for school-age. After the criteria were established by applying a systematic literature review, the analysis of the topics by year was conducted considering the task by period, and the learners' types and the school level were considered. The analysis suggests that despite the short period of research, various subjects were studied in a compressed manner, and Korean language education is now being studied as an independent field as it comes to recent years. However, there were an imbalance in the theoretical research areas, and the “academic Korean language competence” part, which should be discussed fully, has yet to achieve. This study illustrates an instructional model for flipped learning through an example of the 'Introduction to Korean Language Education' course, an introductory undergraduate course in KSL(Korean as a Second Language). Flipped learning is an instructional model that allows students to engage in active learning by creating a meaningful and motivating context for learning. The model incorporates a variety of pre-class, in-class, and post-class activities which help learners to construct/reconstruct their knowledge and develop critical thinking skills. This study demonstrates how the knowledge and cognitive process dimensions of the revised Bloom's Taxonomy can be applied to classroom teaching and learning through an inductive approach. This study proves that flipped learning can promote students' higher order thinking ability and can be easily adaptable to various levels and dimensions of knowledge. Based on the experience of designing and implementing a flipped learning model, the author offers a few pedagogical suggestions. First, just as instructors may feel burdened with creating various learning tasks and activities, learners can feel overwhelmed with a number of student-centered activities. The findings of this study indicate that in terms of course length, seven to eight weeks of flipped learning will be appropriate for effective learning. Second, in order to implement interactive tasks and activities as well as offer individualized feedback, it will be ideal to limit the number of students to less than 30. Finally, securing classrooms that can accommodate various group activities is essential for flipped classroom instruction. (Kyung Hee University)

The purpose of this study was to examine the academic literacy change of foreign undergraduate students. It analyzed the compositions of foreign undergraduates who took the course 'Thinking and Writing' over two semesters at K university. Twelve students participated in this study, and they each wrote about four topics. Each composition was more than 600 characters, and a total of 48 compositions were analyzed. Academic literacy is “the ability to understand and produce text in a shared way in an academic community”. This study evaluated academic literacy using the categories of linguistic literacy, critical literacy, cultural literacy, and information literacy. After evaluating the academic literacy in the 48 compositions, we concluded that undergraduates progressively changed their academic literacy over a year, even though the rate had fallen to a specific point. The foreign undergraduate freshmen students in our study received relatively high scores for their cultural literacy and the content aspects of their linguistic literacy, while the expression aspects of their linguistic literacy received low scores. Although the improvement in cultural literacy was somewhat high through a communication course, such as a first year college writing class, the improvement in the expression aspects of linguistic literacy was somewhat low. It was apparent that the improvement in academic literacy was evenly achieved. In addition, when we looked at the changes in the academic literacy of upper, middle, and lower-level students, we saw different aspects of individual change. (Korea University)

There are many grammar points in Korean language that have similar meanings and functions. Thus, learners have countless difficulties in distinguishing and using those grammars in discourse. The description of similar grammar lessons in Korean textbooks and grammar books are only a part of the whole description of that individual grammar, and it solely teaches the semantical differences. Furthermore, there is also the problem that the results of the previous studies are not reflected in the descriptions of grammar, and that, if reflected, the descriptions are vague and do not provide meaningful explanations to help the process of understanding. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to focus on the similar speculative expressions '-l kes katta' and '-na pota', and prepare a new comparative description of similar grammar points for intermediate and advanced learners. First, it reviewed previous studies to reveal the semantic and syntactical differences between the two expressions. Then it analyzed descriptions of each individual expression and similar expressions in Korean textbooks and grammar books to examine whether the results of previous studies were reflected or not, and to point out some problems in those descriptions. Finally, based on those discussions, a new comparative description was provided. (Seoul National University)

As an extension of previous research stating that discovery learning can be used in teaching grammar, this study predicted that this teaching method can be used effectively with “advanced Korean learners for academic purposes” who are actively engaged in metacognition activities, and focused on discovery learning of Korean grammar for academic text writing. First, this study analyzed the grammar items of writing textbooks for Korean learners for academic purposes and selected 60 discovery learning items of “grammar for academic text writing” by considering items that can be the subject of discovery learning. Moreover, the patterns of grammatical errors and frequency of selected grammar items are examined by analyzing the academic texts produced by the learners, and the scope of grammar discovery learning is presented to be applied to classes. Finally, a survey was conducted on the learners that provided the texts, through which their perception on “grammar in academic texts” and “discovery learning” is examined, and thereby presents ways to apply this knowledge to classes. This study proposes an integrated Korean language education of language, literature, and culture as the standard of “Applied Research for the International Standard Curriculum of Korean Language”, using Yun Heung-gil's modern novel “Rainy Season”(1973) as the text. “Rainy Season” has a high literary evaluation and contains not only the Korean War and the division of Korea, which is a characteristic history of Korea, but also abundantly contains the seasons, weather, family, Korean emotions, folk beliefs and religion. which is suitable for an integrated Korean language education of language, literature and culture. Specific educational plans are as follows. In the first lesson, students study a story, relationships of the characters through the movie “The Rainy Season”(1979). In the second class, students study language aspects such as vocabulary based on listening and reading of texts. In the third lesson, students study the themes that depicts the process of reconciliation and healing from ideological confrontation expressed through love for children during the Korean War, and through the beliefs of native citizens. In the fourth session, students make a presentation about the aspects of social conflict and reconciliation of homeland based on their understanding of Korean War and personal beliefs, the subject of conflict and reconciliation. Through this, students study culture in terms of intercultural exchange. (Pusan National University)
