The Improvement of thermal performance using heat treatment of carbon nanotubes coated on the copper heat sink to take the radiation energy from solar ray for the energy harvesting in earth orbit. Using the additive coating of purified CNT for the increase of specific area and development of thermal conductive capacity, the performance of heat transfer is improved about 0.181 K/W while applying the power of 22 W under temperature of 3.98℃. Coating of purified CNT shows increase of area and volume of thermal layer however it led the partial thermal resistance.

Zirconium has excellent mechanical strength and high heat resistance and excellent corrosion resistance, and it is very important to study zirconium's dissimilar welding properties since it can be used in various applications under harsh environments. Similar welding of pure zirconium and dissimilar metal welding of pure zirconium and pure titanium were performed by TIG welding, and the welding properties were studied in association with microstructural and mechanical properties. In the Zr/Zr welded specimen, sound FZ and HAZ regions showed a basketweave microstructure composed of plate α phase. FZ region of Zr/Ti dissimilar welded specimen exhibited a maximum hardness value of 354.8 Hv, which is about three times higher than that of Ti base metal, due to the precipitation of very fine metastable ω and α phases in the beta matrix. In addition, due to the microstructural continuity in the FZ and HAZ regions, excellent elongation property of 21% was exhibited.

In the present study, we comparatively investigated the microstructures of two hot-rolled stainless steel clad plates; STS 304L - low carbon steel A516-70N and STS 316L - A516-70N. The STS 304L/A516-70N clad plate (Clad_304L_Ni) had a Ni-interlayer between stainless steel and carbon steel and a 90 μm thick deformation band of unrecrystallized austenite grains on the stainless steel. The STS 316L/A516-70N clad plate (Clad_316L) had no interlayer and almost fully recrystallized austenite grains. Clad_304L_Ni exhibited the thinner a decarburized layer in carbon steel and a total carburized layer in stainless steel than Clad_316L. However, a severely carburized layer in stainless steel was thicker for Clad_304L_Ni than Clad_316L. Hardness profiles near the interface of clad plates matched well with microstructures at locations where the hardness values were measured.

Two types of secondary hardening martensitic steels, 10Co-14Ni and 6Co-5Ni, were produced by vacuum induction melting to investigate the effect of ausforming process on mechanical properties. According to the results of present study, the alloy samples ausformed at low temperature indicated a rather low hardness level in overall aging time despite the refinement of martensite lath width. As the result can closely be related with the presence of primary carbides precipitated within the initial austenite matrix, we confirmed that, in ultrahigh strength secondary hardening martensitic alloy steels, the ausforming process can rather limit the degree of secondary hardening during the subsequent aging treatment.

The extrusion experiments using the 7075 aluminum billet have been performed to investigate the effects of die cooling and ram speed on the occurrence of surface defects on the extrudate. The purpose of die cooling was to suppress overheating of the extrudate at the moment of extrusion. In the present die cooling system, liquid nitrogen has been injected in to the die and sprayed to the surface of extrudate. Ram speed was either kept or varied in the range of 1.1~1.7 mm/sec. throughout one extrusion shot to check the occurrence of surface defects. Every extrusion started at a ram speed of 1.25 mm/sec. The temperature of extrudate was measured using a laser thermometer. The 7075 billet of 180 mm in diameter and 550 mm in length was preheated at 390oC and extruded to get a single plate of 8000 mm in length, 150 mm in width and 10 mm in thickness. Each extrudate was checked by eye to find the surface defects. The microstructures were obtained in the specimen cut from each corner of the extrudate using the EBSD micrographs.

Due to high specific strength and low density, AZ series magnesium alloys have been receiving high interest as a lightweight material. However, their industrial application is limited due to the phenomenon that the strength decreases at elevated temperature by the occurrence of softening effect because of the Mg17Al12 phase decomposition. To solve this problem, many research were conducted to increase the high-temperature strength by forming a thermal stable second-phase component by adding new elements to the AZ magnesium. Especially, adding Ca to AZ magnesium has been reported that Ca forms the new second-phase. However, studies about the analysis of decomposition or precipitation temperature, formation composition, and components to understand the formation behavior of these precipitated phases are still insufficient. Therefore, the effect of Ca addition to AZ61 on the phase change and microstructure of the alloy during annealing was investigated. As a result of analysis of the initial and heat-treated specimen, AZ61 formed α-Mg matrix and precipitated phase of Mg17Al12, and AZX611 formed one more type of precipitated phase, Al2Ca. Also, Al2Ca was thermal stable at high temperatures. And after annealing, the laves phase was decomposed to under 10 μm size and distributed in matrix.

In this study, the effect of pressure type and foaming agent on the microstructural change of Al foam produced by powder compact processing was investigated. Better foaming characteristic is easily obtained from extrusion process with strong plastic deformation and preheating than that by uniaxial pressing with preheating. In current powder compact foaming process using TiH2/MgH2 mixture as a foaming agent, a temperature of 670℃ and addition of 30% MgH2 in TiH2 foaming agent was chosen as the most suitable foaming condition. The aluminum (Al) foams with maximum porosity of around 70%, relatively regular pore size and distribution were successfully produced by means of the powder metallurgy method and extrusion process.

Cladding material, which can selectively obtain excellent properties of different metals, is a composite material that combines two or more types of dissimilar metals into one plate. The titanium-copper cladding material between titanium which has excellent corrosion resistance and copper which has high thermal and electrical conductivity, are highly valuable composite materials. It can be used as heat exchangers with high conductivity under severe corrosion conditions. In order to apply the clad plate to the heat exchanger, it must be manufactured in the form of a tube and additional welding is required. It is important to select the cladding material manufacturing process and the welding process. The process of manufacturing the cladding material includes extrusion, rolling, and explosive bonding. Among them, the explosive bonding process is suitable for additional welding because no heat-affected zone is formed. In this study TIG welding of the explosive-bonded dissimilar clad plates was successfully performed by butt welding. The microstructures and bonding interface of the welded part were observed, and the effect of the bonding layer at the welding interface and the intermetallic compounds on the mechanical properties and tensile plastic deformation behaviors were analyzed. And also the integrity of TIG-welded dissimilar part was evaluated.

The crystal grains of polycrystalline diamond vary depending on deposition conditions and growth thickness. The diamond thin film deposited by the CVD method has a very rough growth surface. On average, the surface roughness of a diamond thin film deposited by CVD is in the range of 1-100 um. However, the high surface roughness of diamond is unsuitable for application in industrial applications, so the surface roughness must be lowered. As the surface roughness decreases, the scattering of incident light is reduced, the heat conduction is improved, the mechanical surface friction coefficient can be lowered, and the transmittance can also be improved. In addition, diamond-coated cutting tools have the advantage of enabling ultra-precise machining. In this study, the surface roughness of diamond was improved by thermal diffusion reaction between diamond carbon atoms and ferrous metals at high temperature for diamond thin films deposited by MPCVD.
