Fossil fuel such as oil and natural gas has been used and will be no longer supplied enough to demand in the beginning of thisg century. The use of the fuel makes a lot of environmental pollution to threaten human being`s health especially in big cities and produces a lot of CO? to make green house effect of the earth. It is the time to use clean fuel such as hydrogen to prevent the expected energy crisis and the pollution. A new engine such as fuel cell can be used instead of the conventional internal combustion engine with 2 to 3 times higher efficiency of the conventional engine. The fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen and produces electric energy and pure water, which is a calm engine without air pollution.  In big cities the city buses and the taxies powered by hydrogen fuel cells are suggested to be operated for clean environment. The energy and cost analysis performed for hydrogen and electricity production from wind power and solar cell.

The relation between the deformation and the geometrical shape, and the effect of cold work on the hydrogen absorption behavior in palladium were investigated. The Pd specimens used were plates and wires as cold worked and annealed states. The palladium plates and wires were loaded with hydrogen by electrochemical method. Experimental analyses were carried out through X-ray diffraction, micrometer measurement and decimal balance measurement. As the results, it is found that the effect of cold work on hydrogen absorption capacity was relatively small. The deformation of the palladium plates in thickness direction is larger than in other lateral directions whereas the palladium wires showed the same deformation ratio in all radius directions because of the circular distribution of coexisting ? and ? phases. The products of plastic deformation such as slip fines and voids etc. were observed abundantly in all specimens although the specimens had undergone only once of a hydrogen absorption and desorption.

Placing a hydrogen conducting, methanol impermeable metallic barrier like palladium (Pd) is a well-known method for preventing methanol crossover through solid polymer electrolyte for direct methanol fuel cells (DIVIFC). Applying a bias potential between the anode and the barrier can further develop this concept so that the hydrogen transfer rate is enhanced. Since hydrogen diffuses in Pd as atomic form while it moves through nafion electrolyte as ion, it has to be reduced or oxidized whenever it passes the interface formed by Pd and the electrolyte. We performed experiments to measure the hydrogen transport through the Pd membrane placed in Nafion electrolyte of hydrogen/oxygen fuel cell (PEMFC). Applying a bias potential between the hydrogen electrode of the cell and the Pd membrane facilitated the hydrogen passage through the Pd membrane. The results show that the cell current measured with the Pd membrane placed reached almost 40 % the value measured with the cell without Pd membrane. It was found that the current flown through the bias path is only a few percent of the cell current.

To clear the differences of heat transfer coefficient of in-cylinder gas with fuel properties, the transient heat transfer coefficient of hydrogen gas is investigated by using the hydrogen fueled engine. The measured results were also compared with those of gasoline engine and several empirical equations. Transient heat transfer coefficients were determined by measurements of unsteady heat flux and instantaneous wall temperature in the cylinder head.  As the main results, it is shown that transient heat transfer coefficients have remarkable differences according to fuel properties, and it`s value for hydrogen engine is twice higher than that of gasoline engine. It means that equation of heat transfer coefficient that the effect of fuel properties is considered sufficiently, is needed to analyze or simulate the gas engine performance.

We developed a compact, 10 kWe, purifier-integrated reformer which supplies hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles. Our proprietary technologies regarding hydrogen purification by palladium alloy membrane and catalytic combustion by noble metal coated wire-mesh catalyst were combined with the conventional methanol steam reforming technology, resulting in higher conversion, excellent quality of product hydrogen, and better thermal efficiency than any other systems. In this system, steam reforming, hydrogen purification, and catalytic combustion take place all in a single reactor so that the whole system is compact and easy to operate. The module produces 8.2 N?/hr of 99.999% or higher purity hydrogen with CO impurity less than 10 ppm, which is equivalent to 10 kWe when PEMFC has 45% efficiency. Thermal efficiency of the module is 81% and the power density of the module is 1.6 L/kWe. As the results of experiments, cold-start time has been measured about 20 minutes. Response time of hydrogen production to the change of the feed rate has been within 1 minutes.

The optical transmittance change of Pd thin film due to hydrogen absorption and desorption was examined at room temperature. Hydrogen absorption and desorption cycling effects on optical transmittance were measured 6 times in the pressure range between 0 and 640 torr. Optical transmittance of Pd film was increasing with increasing hydrogen pressure. Ratio of optical transmittance to the change of pressure at ? phase is bigger than that of low hydrogen pressure range.
